Building Skills for Better Business
The New Zealand government has made business productivity a key issue for its third term but the recent "Boost Productivity" seminars missed recognising the impact that basic computer skills have on productivity.
How much time is your business wasting while employees work out how to complete basic tasks on the computer? Are you getting a good return on your IT investment? You can have the latest computer technology, but if no one understands how to use them properly it is like owning a Ferrari and entrusting it to your nephew who has just learned to drive.
Unfortunately no one talks about the problem. The simple fact is that the majority of working adults missed out on computer skills training at school. Most are self taught or learned on the job. Usually they are excellent at their job but there are huge gaps in their computer knowledge. They don't even know what they don't know and become defensive when confronted with this problem.
On a strategic level we talk about creating a knowledge economy but how can we hope to catch the knowledge wave if we are sat in the shallows or stuck on the beach without your togs on because of a lack of basic computer skills? Kiwis are great at taking on new computer technology but no one asks if they know how to use it efficiently.
Training Departments arrange courses and assumptions are made that Brian knows all about Excel and wont need a beginner's course. In fact Brian knows the spreadsheets he uses every day but doesn't understand how to use basic formulas etc. If he goes on an intermediate or advanced course the money will be wasted because he doesn't understand the basics.
Solution
What you need is a way to benchmark the computer skills in your business so that you can be sure that everyone has solid foundation knowledge. The International Computer Driving Licence can do this.
